Display Week 2022: new LCD and OLED screens for XR viewfinders

It has just been celebrated the Display Week 2022 in San José (California) a fair in which the main companies in the sector show their advances in screens for televisions, mobiles or VR devices. Among the products presented, we have been struck by the 4K OLED microdisplays of the eMagin company and the 3K LCD screens from JDI and Innolux. And among the conferences, that of the VP of XR Research of Reality Labs, Joe O’Keeffe, who came to affirm that “there is still no technology to realize the metaverse”.

Japan Display Inc (JDI) is the current supplier of screens for HP in its Reverb G2 viewers, and at this fair it has presented smaller panels, but with higher resolution. These new LCD screens would have a diagonal of 2.27 inches, a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a resolution of 3240×3240. The current ones measure 2.9 inches and their resolution is 2160×2160. For its part, the Taiwanese Innolux also showed similar 3K screens, mounted next to pancake lenses.

More interesting is even what is presented by eMagin Corporation, a 4K OLED Microdisplays manufactured directly on silicon wafers, 2.1 inches in size, 120 Hz refresh rate, a resolution of 3600×4000, and 1,000 nits of brightness in low persistence mode.

The director of this company, Andrew Sculley, told a correspondent of the Upload website that this 4K microscreen has been developed at the request of an undisclosed partner and fulfilling his requirements for a test of a virtual reality viewer. When the Steamboat brand is seen on the plate presented at the fair, that partner could be Valve, and the device for which the rumored Steam Deckard wireless viewer would have been designed.

As for the conference given by Joe O’Keeffe, entitled Display for AR & VR Challenges & Trends, the vice president of Display Optics of Meta presented the challenges that the construction of a metaverse still presents, and encouraged all the companies present at the conference Display Week 2022 to accept these challenges to be able to make a reality among all that “set of virtual spaces where you can create and explore with other people who are not in the same physical space”.
