Zuckerberg: Cambria will be a viewer to work with and will be released later this year, like the web version of Horizon
In his speech to investors, during the presentation of Meta’s financial results in the first quarter of this year, Mark Zuckerberg assured that the high-end viewer known as Project Cambria will go on sale at the end of 2022 and that it will be a device for work use, designed to eventually replace our laptop or work computer.
The CEO of Meta talked about his different technological investments, such as Artificial Intelligence, but most of his speech was devoted to justifying the investments necessary for the creation of the next era of social technology, the metaverse.
The centerpiece of that metaverse that they are starting to build is Horizon, of which there will be a web version later this year that will make it easier for people to enter “metaverse” experiences from many more platforms, even without needing viewers, although the experience will be better using the Meta Quest virtual reality platform now and later with augmented reality devices.
Zuckerberg also referred to the monetization of that metaverse, insisting that we expect to be “significantly better” than others in that aspect and help creators earn a living on Horizon Worlds, something that will provide the platform with an advantage that makes it sustainable.
As for hardware, the main device for Meta is Quest 2, which will coexist with the high-end viewfinder Project Cambria which they will release later this year. This high-end device will have improved ergonomics, full-color mixed reality, eye and facial tracking to allow our avatar to make eye contact and be expressive, thus improving the feeling of presence.
All of the above is not new, but Mark Zuckerberg added something else to the description of Project Cambria this time: it will be a viewer that will focus to a greater extent on cases of working, professional use, and which is designed to replace laptops or other work equipment over time. They will share more details about this device in the coming months, the release of which they are already preparing.
