Can a computer think like a human? This question from the middle of the last century is again relevant in connection with the spread of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Representatives of the company from Novosibirsk they claim that they have created a unique chatbot that talks indistinguishably from a human and passes the famous Turing test.

Presentation of a chatbot from the company it was recently held at a major international conference on artificial intelligence GTC 2019, which was organized by Nvidia and was held in the American city of San Jose. The creators of the chatbot called “Dasha”-Vladislav Chernyshov, a graduate of the Faculty of Automation and Computer Engineering of Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU), and Ilya Stupakov, a senior researcher at the scientific and Educational center “Modeling of Electromagnetic Technologies” of NSTU-declare that their development speaks almost like a person and passes the famous Turing test, which was developed by the English mathematician Alan Turing back in 1950 in order to distinguish the work of computer algorithms from human thinking.

Active assent

“Our solution is built on neural networks, and this is one of the few developments in the field of AI that passes the Turing test. We can say that our robot is one of the best on the market simulates speech, bringing it as close as possible to a human one, ” Vladislav Chernyshev, head of the company, told — The company employs 24 engineers who write the necessary script, depending on the customer’s wishes. Our program can give the interlocutor the right answer even to unexpected questions.”

Solution it works according to the following scheme: first, the robot recognizes speech and records what words are spoken to it. Then a special technology recognizes the meaning: it determines what is being discussed, what script is suitable for what is said, what should be answered. This happens at the same moment when the person on the other end is still talking. Thus, the robot immediately has an answer ready, which it voices to the interlocutor.

To remove long pauses in a conversation with a robot, “Dasha” was taught to simultaneously receive and process information. Thanks to this, the conversation proceeds at a normal pace, the pauses between the replicas are adjusted specifically to simulate normal communication. At the same time,” Dasha ” is able to convey emotions: to make the speech sound realistic, all answers and replicas are recorded with such shades of emotions as interest, confusion, friendliness. Or here’s another interesting point: the so-called active listening. While the person answers the questions, the robot agrees with him, and it turns out that the interlocutor constantly feels that an active, living person is on the line with him.

Also, “Dasha” can be interrupted. If someone cuts into the robot’s replica, it will not go astray. He will pause, “listen” to the person and continue the conversation. And he will start not with the remark on which he was interrupted, but with the one that best fits the meaning after what was said. As a result, a chatbot can conduct a conversation in almost the same way as a live person. Company representatives they say that on one of the audio recordings of the test work, the robot accepted an application for an appointment with a doctor, the interlocutor suddenly asked a question off-topic, then asked to make an appointment, rewrite it for another time and immediately cancel the application. The robot reacted quickly to the requests: it answered all the questions and was able to fulfill the client’s requests.

Take a swing at the operating system

Vladislav Chernyshev says that they managed to create unique functions of the new robot thanks to the fundamental Russian mathematical school. The company has already implemented a number of projects in Russia: in particular, cooperates with the insurance company VSK, the Internet resource “”, “Absolut Bank”, “Credit Europe Bank” , as well as with “Modulbank”. Representatives of the latter say that with the help of since the middle of last year, they have been regularly interviewing customers and, thanks to the robot, in the first month the bank managed to interview 4 times more customers and reduce the load on the call center.

At the same time, the company has ambitious plans for development in international markets. Recently, the American and European funds RTP Global (owned by businessman Leonid Boguslavsky) invested $ 2 million in it. The investment will be used for business development in the United States and other countries where the development of a number of companies have already become interested. According to the company’s management, “Dasha” in the United States can work, for example, as a secretary, answering incoming phone calls. This service can be very much in demand, since advertising phone calls are now a real problem for ordinary Americans who have to answer phone offers from annoying sellers of various goods every day.

At the same time, the company sets more ambitious goals than just selling its product to individual customers. “Today, a unique situation with huge opportunities has been created for developers of software solutions in the field of artificial intelligence,” says Vladislav Chernyshev. — In fact, the situation now is similar to the 80s, when the newly emerging computers did not have a single operating system. It is the same now: artificial intelligence technologies do not have a single platform and standards. Those who are able to create them quickly now can become a second giant like Microsoft. And we intend to create a platform for chatbots in the near future, so that new solutions in this area will be based on our developments.”
