The images and their opposite

Under all the future prospects which cinema and the moving images might have, is perhaps the most beautiful and most amazing: the images in your opposite turned, and the eyes in the opposite direction. That is no longer a camera in spaces with things and people produced your images. But that the images formed, the other way around, again to rooms: to a world that the audience through.

It will be a lot of shooting too many images, said Wim Wenders once (before he bought a Smartphone and a few thousand photos on it, saved); the haters of Selfies, cat pictures and Instagram to vote for him still. Each image is good enough for him, writes Philip Gröning, who has collected a few thousand pictures from the social networks. These pictures he has given an Artificial intelligence. And has designed this new, never-before-seen rooms.

Philip Gröning is a trained film Director and a Maverick artist. His films (“The great silence”, “win the wife of The police”, “My brother is called Robert and is an Idiot”) prices and unsettle your audience. And it is also important to ask the big questions of cinema once again, almost as you were for the first Time: What is the camera what is not visible to the naked eye to see? Where actually begins the fiction, if it is the real body and the real voices in real spaces, the Material of cinema? And the art of Inszenierens really shows that the Director is striving for total control – or is it, on the contrary, therefore, to let things happen and the conflicts to escalate, while the camera is running?

A division that is art and not art at the same time

Two years ago, Groening was appointed visiting Professor of free art at the Munich Academy of art – and it looks as if he has learned from his students almost as much as you can from him. Groening and the students experimented with Artificial intelligence, played with virtual spaces and with three-dimensional images, and occasionally there was in the Munich exhibition halls, the first results to be seen.

What opportunities are opening up but with the incredible computing power and the ability to learn an Artificial intelligence, a division of the art is art, and Not at the same time, and so new that it still has no name: The Groening of the project “Phantom shows Oktoberfest – Oktoberfest Phantom” (which was presented during the October festival in Munich’s Villa Stuck, currently in the exhibition hall at the Tank in Shanghai; after that, Russia and Italy). Groening has copied thousands of pictures from the Munich Oktoberfest from social networks, out of the common, but also from Chinese and Russian; and the Artificial intelligence has designed the Interior of some of the festival tents. You put on the Virtual Reality glasses. And has the feeling, that you look into the future and into the past.
