Samsung is preparing 11K screens to support virtual reality
Chu hye-Yong, executive director of Samsung Display division, announced about the new solution, which will be worked on from June this year.
According to the announcement, the developed display will be built in 11k technology.this will mean that in the case of a screen with a diagonal of 5.7 inches (this is what large smartphone models have today), the image resolution will be 11264 x 6336 pixels, and their density will be at the level of 2250 PPI. For comparison, the currently sold Samsung Galaxy S6 offers a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels at a density of 576 PPI.
The first prototype panels with 11K resolution are expected to be presented in 2018. Samsung is working on them in cooperation with several third-party companies and with the financial support of the South Korean government, which has allocated $ 26.5 million for research and production.
Currently, some manufacturers use QHD-quality screens in their smartphones (more about them). Experts emphasize that in the case of daily use of the smartphone, the use of 11k displays does not make much sense, because the user will not notice the difference compared to other mobile screens with a much lower resolution. However, Samsung explains that it intends to use future panels for the reception of virtual reality, for which very high image quality may be important.
