Ready Player One Reveals the Future of VR

Those in the mixed reality industry have been looking forward to the release of this movie as the VR Messiah, which will lead us to the mainstream adoption of VR technology. And how can we do without prayer:

Please, please, let the film show how cool virtual reality is.

For many developers creating high-value VR content, the future of the industry that they care about is really important. Moreover, over the past year, dozens of articles have been published, either announcing the beginning of the VR era, or burying it.

In many of them, virtual reality was portrayed in a negative way as a harbinger of a bleak future for humanity. Against this background, people often ask the question, what is VR and what value this technology has.

Thanks to Ready Player One, billboards with a person wearing a VR headset can now be seen on the streets around the world. For all virtual reality enthusiasts and evangelists, this film is of great importance.

For such people, the blockbuster caused excitement, tk. he summed up a certain final line, showing everyone that VR is really cool.

You can imagine that many will now run to entertainment centers and use VOID or Imax Experience Center to try to immerse themselves in virtual reality. Keep in mind, however, that VR technology is not the OASIS that you might have seen in the movie at this time. To date, there is nothing like this in the VR industry, but in the near future, most likely, a similar “Oasis” will appear in real life.

Therefore, taking into account all these nuances, consider what we were shown in the film, what we have now, and what will appear in the near future.

Note: below are minor filmstrip spoilers.

Headsets

In film:

At first glance, Ready Player One headsets are similar in size and shape to the existing Oculus Rift. However, in the movie in 2024, these headsets work with harmless lasers that project an image onto the player’s retina, unlike our current headsets, which have a regular display.

The gadgets in the film are lightweight, wireless, and capable of producing images that are indistinguishable from reality with minimal or no latency. Other headsets appear later in the film, such as when Wade upgrades his helmet to a model with translucent glass.

In addition, the book mentions the powerful OASIS servers located in Columbus. Therefore, it is fair to assume that the headsets themselves do not have computing power, but only receive all the necessary information over the 5G network (or higher).

Today:

Existing headsets are tied to powerful PCs, or they are mobile devices like the announced Oculus Go or Oculus Santa Cruz with built-in displays and computing components. So far, there are no gadgets on the market that use lasers to send images to the retina. However, some (namely, Inlel) are working on a similar concept and perhaps this year we will see the first results.

Tomorrow:

When Magic Leap is released, it will be the closest to the mixed reality headsets featured in the movie. The device will send images directly to the eye, providing a more comfortable experience than sitting in current headsets and looking at pixels on imperfect displays.

Of course, Magic Leap will not be able to compare with what is shown in the film: the design of VR glasses is far from perfect, the viewing angle, at best, will be 40 degrees. In addition, you will need to wear something like a mini-PC on your belt, which is responsible for the operation of the device.

Nevertheless, the entrance to the Magic Leap arena along with the screening of the film will be a rather significant event for the entire still short VR history of mankind. Note also the fact that the term “VR” will not apply to the headset, since Magic Leap is a Mixed Reality (MR) device.

Tactile sensations

In film:

The tactile costumes in the film are aesthetically gorgeous. As stated in the original book, such a device is a combination of a fashionable suit with boots and gloves, in the material of which numerous sensors are woven. When characters are hit or shot in virtual reality, they feel real pain, which looks harmonious during action scenes. In addition, there are several examples of “pleasure” here.

So, in the VR nightclub, Art3mis dances opposite Wade and the crotch area of his costume is “activated”. And in many other scenes, the viewer can see hints of some forbidden things that OASIS players can use.

The villainous Nolan Sorrento wears a tactile suit during his OASIS duels, but for normal VR experiences, he uses an ornate leather chair that also allows him to get tactile sensations (Cool!).

Today:

Sorrento’s tactile “chair” resembles the development of the Positron company, which can be seen recently at various film festivals, as well as in some hotels. It is quite comfortable, practical and perfect for the first immersion in virtual reality.

From the point of view of tactile “romantic” sensations, the teledildonics and the VR porn industry are not only alive and well, but also continue to develop actively. Tactile gloves like the Haptx VR Gloves have been around for a long time and are constantly being improved. Currently, with the help of such devices, one can grope the shape of a virtual object, its texture, and also feel the temperature of the object.

Tomorrow:

Full immersion in VR (involving all human senses) is still an unattainable dream, which is one of the most popular trends in the VR industry.

Teslasuit came closest to realizing this dream with its eponymous suit, which allows you to feel tactile (and not only) sensations in virtual reality. And the Teslasuit looks a hell of a lot like the costume worn by the main character in the movie.

Traffic

In film:

One of the first scenes in the film shows Wade navigating the Oasis using a simple omnidirectional treadmill. As the plot develops, the mechanics of movement will change.

So the Sixers (the army of the protagonist’s enemies) use special devices that keep them in an upright position (they still have the same treadmill under their feet). If necessary (to drive a vehicle in VR), they can sit on it. And in the Aech truck called “Hive Five”, players are attached to the ceiling using special wires that do not interfere with their movement in the virtual world.

Today:

Omnidirectional treadmills still exist today. And they are similar to those shown in the film. Tracking the user’s movement is carried out using external sensors. And for the maximum similar experience, equipment a la The Void is used, which requires special equipment worn in a backpack behind the back.

Tomorrow:

In the near future, virtual reality awaits us, where all physical movements will correspond to movements in the real world without the need to connect a bunch of wires. Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) are already being used for motion capture in movies and games. These systems can be easily integrated into the next generation tactile suit for full body transfer in VR. (The fact that many people will always want to play while sitting on a chair or sofa counts here too.)

Digital currency

In film:

There is one universal currency in Oasis, the value of which is more stable than the value of real money. This currency is more reliable than real world finance. In the process of hunting for Easter eggs, Wade earns this digital money and uses it to order real things through a drone delivery system. In the “Oasis”, players can complete various quests, receiving money for this.

Today:

Today’s cryptocurrency is in a chaotic state. And despite the fact that many question the security of digital currency, millions of people are eager to learn more about this revolutionary new phenomenon that seeks to balance all the financial systems of the world.

Tomorrow:

Democratizing cryptocurrencies will be of paramount importance. Some companies, such as Robinhood, are already doing an excellent job of this task today, providing access to cryptocurrencies using simple mobile applications. Some argue that the film actually predicted the rise of cryptocurrency. However, there is no mention of altcoins like Ethereum, Monero or Ripple.

Avatars

In film:

As Wade states at the beginning of the film, in Oasis, you can be whatever you want to be, regardless of your appearance, gender, background, etc. It all depends on you. For example, Wade changes his haircut, which is then corrected by Art3mis, making the protagonist’s hairstyle even cooler.

Wade’s best friend, Aech, is African American. In Oasis, she is a brutal, muscular military. In the film, the beauty and variety of free user avatars is contrasted with the sixers’ monochrome avatars. “Oasis” is a free and open space where you can take any look for yourself.

Today:

It would be great if we could upload our copy to virtual reality, but modern methods of such duplication are far from perfect. For example, Facebook “does not allow” this user to be fat in VR. The scanning technologies used in Windows Mixed Reality can create your exact avatar, but the cost is very high.

Tomorrow:

In the future, creating an avatar will become commonplace: you can scan your face or body and then transfer it to VR. Or just create yourself any suitable avatar. It will be like in VR Chat, where you can not only select a specific character, but also configure its individual parameters.

We’re on the cusp of a media revolution as new mixed and virtual reality technologies evolve every day, and Ready Player One showed how they can reach the mass market.

At the same time, the film also talks about the morality associated with new technologies and human immersion in VR. Will our own “Oasis” be well protected and distributed around the world? Should we become the creators and curators of this virtual space?

If we want to avoid virtual reality filled with aggressive ads? as in the film, you need to take all the necessary measures in advance. This is the essence of the film’s message: VR has the same impact on a person as the real world. So choose wisely.
