"Kinect does not fit to virtual reality"

Palmer Luckey is only 22 years old, but already a multi-millionaire. Finally, Facebook has bought his company Oculus VR for two billion dollars. According to self-aware of the Virtual Reality entrepreneur occur, sometimes without regard to cooperation partners.

Microsoft, for example, the Oculus is working closely, finally, the Virtual-Reality glasses, the company should be connected to a powerful PC, if you comes at the beginning of 2016 on the market. In the run-up to the launch of Windows 10 was proclaimed in effect an Alliance. What this means for Luckey but apparently, that he has to deal with the Partner too delicate feeling.

In an interview on the Cologne Gamescom Luckey from Microsoft’s current game console, Xbox One, and 3D camera, the Kinect will be a bad testimony with regard to his special field of Virtual reality (VR): “to bring VR on consoles to Run at all, is very difficult. The performance is also much lower than on a PC.”

Too weak, too slow

The other step in the development is so rapid that consoles would be quickly left behind: “PC VR will be better and better every year, while you have to work for Virtual Reality on consoles in four or five years, even with the same Hardware.” Of course, all of this is also cut off a page on Sony’s Playstation 4 glasses of Morpheus, in Cologne also try.

On the return System, which is sometimes used for Holodeck steps in combination with the Oculus glasses, ask for Microsoft’s Kinect responds Luckey: “This type of technology is interesting in itself, but Kinect not fit to VR, because it was designed for.”

Luckey explains why: “The latency, i.e. the delay between Input and Output, is simply too high. It’s enough to play on a TV, but for VR, neither the latency nor the precision of the Kinect are designed.” In fact, the delay of the console camera alone is larger than the entire loop by Tracking the head movements until complete graphic output in an Oculus Rift.

Microsoft keeps covered

Microsoft has Shannon Loftis, according to behind-the-Scenes with VR technology, will not comment on this but still practical. Loftis is for the in-house game development at Microsoft, responsible, should be perfectly informed. The combination of Kinect, Oculus house is not working internally, she says. Loftis speaks only of the “exciting opportunities”, and refers to experiments, and the other, external developers, and researchers with the combination of companies.

In fact, there is in addition to the issue of latency problems, says Palmer Luckey: Although Microsoft have demonstrated in the introduction of the new Kinect Generation, that the camera can even capture a single Finger, but: “The looks on TV well, but in truth, this is somewhat misleading. In VR you can see that the fingers are not always displayed correctly, you can see the delays, and the Finger will be collected only from a single angle.” On a screen, not on the case, but “in VR the other side of the Hand is missing”. Indeed, those who like to experiment with the combination use, usually multiple Kinect cameras at the same time.

“Future Generations”

Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe says that it is possible to envisage that the “future generations of such technology” could overcome the above problems.

Luckey added: “in the long term, the goal is to capture not only the hands, but the whole body, down to the facial Expressions and body language.”

Oculus has developed for the market launch of its VR-glasses and a controller system, the movements of both hands can grasp. Luckey promises that his company would be interested in permanently for all aspects of the technology: “VR is not only a command or a display. It is a very close combination of Input and Output, which together produce this Illusion.”
