Israeli company to produce batteries for electric cars, charging in 5 minutes

Israeli company StoreDot was the first to produce batteries that can fully recharge in 5 minutes, The Guardian reports. These batteries will significantly accelerate the already growing popularity of electric vehicles.

New Li-ion battery was developed by the Israeli company StoreDot and is produced by Eve Energy company in China on the standard production lines. Battery can fully charge in 5 minutes, but this would require a charger with more power. Using the existing infrastructure of charging stations, the company wants for 5 years to achieve the performance of the charging battery 160 km in 5 minutes.

"Barrier number one for the implementation of electric vehicles, the value, the concern about range," said Doron Maiersdorf, CEO of StoreDot. "You are either afraid of getting stuck on highway or you will have two hours to sit at a charging station. But if the experience of the driver exactly like the gas station [petrol car], all the trouble goes".

In existing lithium-ion batteries as an electrode used graphite, in which lithium ions are pushed for charge accumulation. But when they quickly charged ions accumulate and can turn into metal and short the battery. The StoreDot battery replaces the graphite semiconductor nanoparticles, in which ions can move faster and easier. And later the company plans to move to silicon, which is much cheaper. According to Maiersdorf their cost will be the same as existing lithium-ion batteries.

"A five-minute charging lithium-ion battery was considered impossible," he said. "But we are not the manufactured laboratory prototype, we produced engineering samples with mass production line. This demonstrates that it is feasible and commercially ready".
