Experience in developing VR simulators in 2021 based on HTC Vive. Part 1

In this article I would like to share the experience of developing VR simulators developed by our team this year.

To begin with, I suggest defining the terms, i.e. what exactly do we mean by “simulators”. Computer simulation simulator is a software for personal computers and is a means of professional training of personnel, designed to form and improve the trainees’ professional skills and abilities.

Computer simulation simulators are used for systematic training, i.e. to ensure the assimilation of a certain set of knowledge, skills, abilities and procedures. The task to be solved is to ensure that the acquired materials or skills meet the requirements of the upcoming work, the effectiveness of the educational process, and also to ensure that the stereotypes learned during training are successfully transferred to the conditions of real work.

The virtual painting simulator is designed to train specialists of the painting and bodywork section in a classroom environment without the need to spend real paint and varnish materials. It serves the purposes of developing the educational process, makes it possible to scale the training base, safely simulate real processes, saves consumables and automates knowledge control.

What tasks were set:

  • Study of technological maps
  • Selection and mixing of paint and varnish materials components
  • Study of the procedure for setting up the spray gun
  • Studying the mechanics of painting
  • To study the procedure for performing painting works
  • To study the procedure for issuing a vehicle
  • The use of a full range of means to reduce fatigue when using a helmet (for example).

Created 3D models – objects for interaction in VR:

  • Car Parts for painting
  • Personal protective equipment – gloves to protect hands, a respirator mask, a painter’s suit.
  • Ruler for mixing.
  • Scales
  • Air compressor to ensure the operation of pneumatic tools.
  • A table for performing tinting works.
  • Spectophotometer.
  • A set of pigments and Duxone components (54 pcs.)
  • The preparation area for painting the car. In the upper part there is a ventilation system, lighting and curtains that extend to the floor.
  • Painting chamber. Includes lighting systems, supply and exhaust ventilation. Additionally equipped with an air heating and filtration system to speed up the drying process.
  • The spray gun is pneumatic.
  • Half mask respirator and 3M mask respirator. Protects respiratory organs from gases, vapors, aerosols, etc.
  • Equipment of the preparation area for painting.
  • Infrared drying apparatus.
  • Holders of painting parts in the process of painting (such as “helicopter”).
  • Dishes for mixing components.
  • Cabinet for painting test samples and test samples
  • Thermometer
  • Cloth for wiping samples
  • Light cabinet

What was done:

  1. The simulator uses real codes and names of paint and varnish materials in accordance with the manufacturers’ lines, which simplifies the process of training painters and technologists.
  2. A mathematical model of mixing components of paint and varnish materials, such as solvents, thickeners, bases, as well as selecting a color from pigments. The correct proportion of the mixture affects the quality and visualization of the painting process.
  3. The following settings are implemented: changing the nozzle, changing the pressure in the spray gun, changing the radii of the torch.
  4. The accompanying stages of the technological process of painting are simulated: degreasing of the surface, drying of the painted part, grinding of the part.
  5. A mathematical model of the torch physicist has been created. The physical model of the spray gun torch is as reliable as possible, the main aspects that affect the quality and visualization of coloring are taken into account: the distance from the nozzle to the surface, – the angle of deviation of the torch direction from the normal to the painted surface, the speed of the spray gun movement, – the touch of the painted surfaces. Calculation of the volume of paint and varnish material used in the painting process, the thickness of the applied layer on each surface area.
  6. Visual display of excessive/insufficient surface painting (consumption rates of paint and varnish materials for surfaces are set according to technological maps)
  7. A hardware complex based on the HTC Vive system has been assembled

Why HTC Vive?

We could not find an alternative to HTC Vive Tracker trackers. A convenient thing that can be attached, for example, to a paint gun and, with the help of a mic on the trigger and triple pins (pogo pins), transmit a push signal.

What did we make a mistake and redone

Assembling the stand on the “office TV stand” was not the best idea of the team. As a result, a huge number of wires and the overall appearance turned out to be “not very”, which slightly spoiled the overall impression of the product, despite the excellent software solution.

In the following projects, we will try already “specialized” stands for VR, just such we found from a company from which, by the way, we always bought VR equipment).
