As I moved the chat from WhatsApp to Telegram, and nothing broke

If you recently opened WhatsApp, you have probably come across the requirement to accept the new terms and Conditions and privacy Policy. In short: data about the phone number, transaction details, information about the mobile device and the IP addresses will now be transferred to Facebook. 8 February 2021 or you use the messenger under the new rules, or not use it at all.

I don’t like the way that was chosen by WhatsApp (and Facebook globally) in the field of personal data processing. So my choice is to no longer use WhatsApp. But there are a few chats that I would like to keep. Ideally, to migrate to Telegram. But is it possible to do so?

Short answer: Yes, but text only, without pictures and voice messages. Here is the result:

On GitHub there is a project TLImporter. It allows you to migrate to Telegram any chat rooms, which are exported in TXT format. WhatsApp is a suitable option.

TLImporter offers two options:

  • Transfer a conversation from WhatsApp to your favorites (Saved Messages) Telegram.
  • Transfer a conversation from WhatsApp in the appropriate chat to Telegram.

I prefer the second option, but I checked both ways — it works.

TLImporter on GitHub

Have TLImporter there are versions for WIndows and Linux. To collect the file under macOS have their own.

Important: the duration of the import depends on the number of messages. Developer TLImporter does not recommend the use Telegram in the data transfer time.

The first method is to import the chat in “my favorites”

The main advantage of this method — you do not need the consent of the interlocutor. You can just export the chat from WhatsApp and to throw them into the saved messages in Telegram.

  1. Open the WhatsApp conversation you want to save.
  2. Call for additional menu, press “More”, “Export chat”.
  3. Send the content of the dialogue by e-mail or cloud storage. You can choose any option, just the. TXT file was on the computer.

Now you need to import the file in the Telegram.

  1. Start TLImporter.
  2. Click on Enter to proceed to the import.
  3. Enter the phone number to log in to your account Telegram.
  4. Enter the code that will come in the Telegram.
  5. Then asks you whether you want to move the chat 1:1 or leave it in “Favorites”. Enter “N” to send the dialog to “favorites”.
  6. Specify the path to the TXT file or just drag it to the window TLImporter.

  7. Write your name exactly as it appears in the exported file WhatsApp.
  8. Write the person’s name — exactly as it appears in the exported file WhatsApp.
  9. Check the import settings and enter “!C” to start the data transfer.
  10. After the import is complete, click on Enter to log out.

There are additional settings, but I did standard

Here is the result:

So it displays the chat from WhatsApp Favorites Telegram

It’s not pretty, there is no separation of the interlocutors. But most importantly, the content of the dialogue now will not go away.

The second method is to move the dialogue WhatsApp to Telegram chat with the same person

The main difficulty of this method — you will need the consent of the interlocutor. It needs to log in TLImporter. Otherwise, to add messages to chat with him via Telegram will not work.

The exported file from WhatsApp the same. The changes will be only during import.

  1. Start TLImporter.
  2. Enter the phone number and sent the code to log in under the account of the Telegram.
  3. To the question “Do you want to import a conversation using two users in a 1:1 format?”, answer “Y”.
  4. If you need a secret chat, type “Y”. If enough ordinary, enter “N”.
  5. Log in to TLImporter on behalf of the other person — you need to specify the phone number and code that will send a Telegram.
  6. Specify the path to the file you exported from WhatsApp.

  7. Write your name exactly as it appears in the exported file WhatsApp.
  8. Write the person’s name — exactly as it appears in the exported file WhatsApp.
  9. Check the import settings and enter “!C” to start the data transfer.
  10. After the import is complete, click on Enter to log out.

Most importantly, do not make a mistake when adding the name

The result I showed above, but let’s look again:

Each interviewee filled his chat messages WhatsApp

Looks more attractive than the Saved Messages. It’s a pity that can only carry text. But the main problem is solved — important chats stored in readable form in the Telegram. Now you can say goodbye to WhatsApp.
