What's next for Progressive Web Apps?
Earlier this year, Mozilla has released Firefox 85 – this version contain, in particular, protection from supercookies, that is, cookies that could greatly impact the privacy of users and refused to support PWA in a separate window. And despite the fact that support is present merely as an experimental feature, the rejection of it is a bit closes the possibility of using the Progressive Web Apps as desktop applications.
What do Progressive Web App? Such things can be called a screen that behavior and more opportunities for resemble more native apps than web sites. However, they fully use the capabilities of modern browsers.
Among these features we have, in particular, Web App Manifestthat allows you to define metadata associated with the web application, if specifications Service Workerów, handling in the background, as well as the relationship between workerem a website with activities.
The term Progressive Web Apps was created Francesa Berrimana and Alex Russell in 2015 and since then this idea very much, very quickly gained popularity, and many companies that have them introduced himself, was very happy.
Read more about PWA, you can read here.
You can, however, the conclusion is that waiver supports PWA in Firefox could mean the end of dreams that Progressive Web Apps have replaced desktop applications moreover, there is a good chance that Google or Microsoft will do the same if we are talking about on your browser.
Now let’s focus on what the function with which refuses Mozilla, and how to really affirming my decision.
Site Specific Browser (SBB)
Function that gets rid of Mozilla, is called Site Specific Browser (SBB). This feature is experimental, and it allows sites to run mode desktopowym and open in a separate window. This feature was already available in Firefox 73 and was in every next version.
Mozilla wants her, but to get rid of it, and komunikowała it is already some time ago, which, however, is seen on their bug tracker. Dave Townsend, architect Firefox, wrote that SBB has a lot of bugs and doesn’t bring too many real benefits for users. Furthermore, with this function the following can enter confusing to the user, giving them the signal that this is actually something that the browser supports.
There is a high probability that for Mozilla followed by Google and Microsoft with their flagowymi browsers. It may mean that the promotion of the PWA will be very heavy, and he’ll die again, in the end, of natural causes.
It may also be that Mozilla wants to get rid of PVA because the app takes too long and takes too many resources.
PWA – market share
Part of PWA in the market is a difficult question, and this is mainly because there is no specific data, because companies simply do not provide. Here, however, we can read that the only two companies, of which it would be possible to get a measure of accurate data to Google, and Samsung, and it’s because their servers WebAPK. Samsung unfortunately not share the actual data in PWA, and Google is also, apparently, prefers to remain silent. The latest available information about PWA come with 2019 Samsung then stated that recorded more than 20 million downloads PWA from 80 different domains.
Some data is also available from HTTP Archive Web Almanac. There we can read that 1% of the websites used on the Service Workera and 2.2% contained instalowalny the Web App Manifest. It should, however, be remembered that such a platform as Safari on iOS or Chrome on Android does not require Service Workera to launch the PWA, so that these applications can be a little higher. Moreover, the use of the Service Workerów increased by 38% during 2020.
Despite all figures given here are quite low. Do they have a chance to improve? Let’s see how can we work on the development of PWA.
Here, unfortunately, it is better if we are talking about access to information. If we are talking about Progressive Web Apps, that’s progress in their development, it seems that it is not so good. The mere fact that all large companies such as Apple and Google, to hide information related to PVA may be something to witness. Progressive Web App in all languages around 2017/2018 year, but now he must spend lightly steamed.
Moreover, it is very difficult to determine the participation of PWA on the market – if a large company has provided specific figures, then perhaps you would be more confident say in what direction it is moving. All this secrecy is also not good.
If anyone of You, in turn, are interested in where PWA can be installed, have a look here. This list is constantly updated.
Move Mozilla in a sense, determines the future for the PWA application will only web pages on steroids and, most likely, will not substitutes a simple native application – despite the fact that in some cases it makes sense.
